In Newport News, Virginia for work until next Wednesday. All this time I thought Newport News was a periodical but it appears to be a place, go figure! Ended up in the refreshed 2017 Kia Forte Sedan for 8 days, which bites because I still think this is the most phoned-in refresh in the history of Kia products. Oh well. It’s fine, the car is a good basic car! I hate the steering....I HATE the STEERING...especially in “sport” mode...I. HATE. THE. STEERING!!

I did learn that the Forte corners so flat you can set a mostly empty 24 oz fountain drink on the passenger seat without it moving an inch! That was a Bob Ross level of happy accident! I’m going to wear down these tires on the overwhelming number of interchange loops out here though.

Lesson 487: Don’t put three modes of steering into your car if they all suck monkey peppers. Creating multiple bad options for adjusting an issue doesn’t cover up the fact that you have an issue, it makes that issue even more apparent, child!

I’m still a Korean car fan though. The engines are damn close to being something special, and I can tell the suspensions are beginning to catch up to Honda. But until this steering problem is fixed I can’t deal with these. Either the performance group and Nurburgring tuning will improve them or autonomous driving will justify them not putting in any real development on these.

Ah, lovely Newport News. Getting there from Norfolk is always a joy...

Welcome to Hampton Roads! Enjoy your stay, and watch out for the drivers.

I really dislike the facelift. The old model looked great.. This one,not so much.

Great, now I know this crap is regular. *sigh* The area looks nice despite the blurred vision from slamming my head against the steering wheel.

They gave it a face inspired by the Sedona. So hot...can’t even right now.

Unfortunately, yes; the traffic is simply maddening (and sometimes moronic) here. There are upsides though...

Whilst you’re here, I recommend stopping by the Virginia Beach Sportsplex on Friday at 7 P.M.:

The traffic might suck, but some nice rides come out to the Night Moves events. It’s one of the very few places I’ve spotted 1st-Gen RX-7s in primo condition, and I once spotted what looked to be a bone-stock Mk. IV Supra (apologies for the crappy potato cam pic):

And, and, and...there’s also this magnificent beastie down here in Norfolk:

As a former resident of Norfolk, I endorse this message. It's been 30 years since I moved away, and it's not gotten any better.

Certainly not the traffic, and nightly sirens are becoming increasingly more frequent.

Wiki has some interesting etymology on how the city got its name. Also, it’s actually pronounced “Newpert News.” And it’s on “the peninshula.” I lived for many years in Norfolk. Once you get over the traffic (if you can), it's a great area. Tons of American history and nice beaches.

It’s awful. It’s ay too big and aggressive for this car

Repeating what MBW said. Front is awful. So bad. Way too big and faux aggressive

Norfolk, since I was stationed here in 2012. Separated from the USN last year and landed a job here.

Could you clarify what's actually wrong with the steering? I'm imagining something too light where the sport mode tries to create that artificial "weight" which still isn't right.

It is electric power steering, the issue is that the weight and resistance isn’t linear. If you hold the wheel at any position you’ll feel the steering “flicker” as it isn’t sure if it needs to add or subtract weight. Sport mode intensifies this but is actually too heavy and way out of line to what the wheels are doing.

Imagine a rubber band. Now imagine you have the steering centered and move the wheel in any direction. You’ll feel that the wheel has ZERO resistance when you move it then wants to snap back to center after you have stopped moving it. Now is there ever a time a rubber band loosens as you pull it and tightens as it returns to center? NO! It’s the complete opposite and that’s the issue. It isn’t just bad, it’s straight up incorrect! You can’t get used to it because it’s fundamentally wrong.
